7 Tips to Save Money on Quality Web Design

One of the most common mistakes I see new entrepreneurs make is overspending for website design. Eager small business owners on the most limited budgets shell out hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars to get their sites aesthetically pleasing before going live. While there are many quality professional designers out there, most are way overpriced and under deliver well below expectations. It is also often difficult to maintain control of your website’s content once you put it into the hands of an outsourced service provider. Simple updates like changes in sales prices can take days to implement depending on the size and capabilities of your web designer. If you do decide that you simply have to outsource your web design, here are seven tips to prevent you from shelling out the really big bucks:

1. Price shop: get quotes from each designer along with a full description of the scope of service they will provide. Use the quotes to negotiate lower prices.

2. Use college students: this talented group is eager to build their portfolios and will often perform the work for free or really cheap as long as you allow them to use your business as a reference. You can usually find an abundance of advertisements requesting clients on sites like Craig’s List.

3. Check references: take a look at portfolios and visit their completed jobs. Check for congruency, site feel and ease of navigation. Contact the site owner for feedback pertaining to the designer’s customer service policies and response.

4. Provide your own artwork: many designers will charge extra for providing stock photos. Take your own pictures and stipulate their use within the contract terms.

5. Get a contract: too many times I have seen small business owners stuck with crappy, dysfunctional websites with little recourse for compensation due to the lack of a written contract. Make sure the contract covers every conceivable item including S.E.O., future updates and job turnaround time.

6. Write your own ad copy: many web design companies offer full service packages that include copywriting. Don’t do it! First off, nobody knows your business better or more passionately than you and secondly, this service can run your bill into the high heavens.

7. Just say NO to flash: I know it’s cute and very tempting but guess what? It is usually annoying to your site visitors and EXPENSIVE! Furthermore, flash presentations are not search engine friendly and since these are usually used on your gateway, or Home page, your site could be completely overlooked. How many times have you seen a flash animation on a first-page Google search result?

Web design can get pretty pricey so your best bet is to do it yourself. Most hosting services include a free page builder program and a variety of user-friendly templates to get you started. You can also use simple programs like Microsoft FrontPage or Adobe DreamWeaver. There is usually some type of a demo version of these programs included in the original software package that came with your personal computer. Whether you choose a web design service or do it yourself, the important things to consider are maintaining control of your content and keeping your costs down.

Why Go For Cheap Web Hosting

In the internet world today, the competition is rising as well as the demand. Some would use more money to host a website but some is just tight on the budget. So, web hosting options are turned to cheap web hosting. Although cheap, it doesn’t mean that they are not good. They might just be enough for some webmasters out there.

A cheap web hosting will usually provide you a storage space of 100MB. With this kind amount of space, you could actually have enough freedom to place banners on your website. That will do good to make your website interesting. As for email accounts, you will usually get up to 19 email account registered under that particular host. Next, the bandwidth, a cheap hosting will give you a considerably 1GB bandwidth. This is acceptable and they even provide ready made templates for you to choose from to build your website.

As for the negative side of things, cheap hosting means that you are not likely to have you own domain and you will be placed in a sub-domain. If you are using a free web hosting service, you won’t even get an email function. This will prove to be a major factor to show your qualities and if you are running an online business, not having your own email with your own domain will show lack of professionalism. Furthermore, you do not have access to database which means that you will not be able to upload files whenever you like.

Therefore, cheap hosting is one of many ways for you to get a website on to the internet. However, you have to consider the purpose of your website and how it will let the people who go to your website feel. If it is for business purposes, you must be convincing so that people will be comfortable with your service. Even though you have to spend more in the beginning, with great care and work done to your website, you will get your return in time.

Uptime : You need a good host that is dependable, if there server is down your site is down. So look for a hosting company that has a good uptime record. I Personally use blue host for my hosting provider there uptime and reliability is outstanding. Never had a problem yet (knock on wood).

Server load time : is how fast your site will load, I don”t know about you but i really don”t like waiting for a web site or page to load up. normally i will not even stick around and wait for the site to load. All of my sites have a one second load up time and some of my pages are pretty big. So once again look for a provider that is dependable and reliable.

Hosting Features

control panel : allows domain owners to manage and monitor their web site. The cpanel is basically the back stage of your web site, were you can gain Access to server logs, get diskspace and bandwidth stats, Email account configuration, Maintaining FTP accounts, Managing databases, check Visitor statistics using web log analysis software, use file manager, html editor Plus most cpanels offer a wide selection of useful software for building a top notch web site. Like simple script, fantastico de lux , shopping carts.(ect).

Diskspace : is the amount of data you can store on a web hosts server. Each character in a document counts as one byte. Images can easily reach sizes of 100,000 bytes (100 kilobytes), with downloads exceeding 1,000,000 bytes (1 megabyte) easily. so look for a hosting company that offer higher disk space limitations.

Bandwidth : is the amount of data that can be transferred over the network in a fixed amount of time. On the Net, it is usually expressed in bits per second (bps) or in higher units like Mbps (millions of bits per second). 28.8 modem can deliver 28,800 bps, a T1 line is about 1.5 Mbps. look for a hosting company that offer higher bandwidth limitations.

Domain : Most respectable hosting companies include the domain name in your hosting plan. so look to make sure it is included in the plan. Some hosting companies display a low price, then when you sign up they try to add a bunch of extra charges.

Web Hosting - Providers and Their Reliability

There are the providers whose services are restricted to the web. The free hosting providers offer web service free of cost or sometimes it is totally backed by advertisement and if you compare this service to paid hosting service, then this is very much constrained. The clustered hosting providers boast of several servers that host identical content. Thus, the provision for resource exploitation gets enhanced. Then there are shared hosting providers whose websites share the same server with many other sites. The range of these sites ranges from just a few to more than thousands.

Some hosts only do business over the internet. Some provide their services at no charge by posting ads and using the. Such a service is usually much more limited in comparison to one you pay for. Those who deal in clustered hosting have a number of servers which host the same data. In that way, they can exploit their resources maximally. There are also shared-hosting providers who share servers with lots of other websites. That can mean only several or a very large number of them.

There are many types of hosting providers available on the internet. Free hosting providers offer web services for free although sometimes they are backed by advertisements. However compared to paid hosting services, they offer less. Unlike single hosting services, clustered hosting services provide several servers with identical content enabling your content to reach a broader audience. Shared hosting providers share the same server with many other sites. These hosting providers can have a few sites to more than a thousand sites.

When it comes to services, what you pay for is what you get. For, example if you enlist the help of a free web service, expect to get plenty of advertisements as well. With a paid service, you can enjoy the benefits of several options as well as no ads and better publication of your website to national companies. If you used to ever popular shared server, then expect your site to be shared with several other websites on the same servers which may cause delays if a large amount of people search for your site.
